Tax Return for Fashion Stylist

If you’ve always loved fashion, and can look at a stranger and instantly know exactly which clothes they should wear to make them look at their best, being a freelance fashion stylist could be the perfect career for you.

This guide will show you how to become a freelance fashion stylist.

What does a fashion stylist do?

A career in fashion styling will open lots of opportunities. You might work on photo shoots, TV, film, fashion shows and catwalks, or even with celebrities.

Whichever opportunities you find, you’ll be choosing the right clothes for the right situation, person, or body types.

Some of the tasks a freelance fashion stylist will have to perform:

  • Finding the perfect clothing and accessories for a client.
  • Personal shopping for clients to buy them the clothes you think will look good on them.
  • Talking to the client to find out their tastes in clothing and colours, etc.
  • Analysing a client’s body shape to find the clothes that match their body.
  • Sometimes replacing a client’s entire wardrobe with clothes that suit them better, and clothes which are trendier.

Learning to be a fashion stylist – training and qualifications

Having formal qualifications aren’t essential to becoming a freelance fashion stylist.

Experience, though, is vital.

A degree in an artistic field such as fashion or art will show people that you are creative, though many people move into the fashion styling profession via an apprenticeship or internship.

Finding an apprenticeship or internship

Many high-end brands offer work experience in fashion styling. You can find some with a quick search on Google, but many companies don’t advertise their internships, so you’ll have to contact the companies you’d like to work with directly.

You could be offered a full-time job at the end of it.

An interest in fashion – keeping up to date

Fashions change all the time.

If you don’t keep up with current trends, you won’t be effective at your job and people won’t hire you to be their fashion stylist.

Read fashion magazines to see what’s happening in the fashion industry, and attend fashion shows.

How to find work as a freelance fashion stylist

It’s recommended that you start your career in fashion styling as an employee at a company to gain experience, and move to freelancing later on.

But whether you choose to gain lots of experience first, or just jump straight into the world of freelancing, you’ll be spending much of your time and effort in the early days marketing your services to attract new clients.

Here are a few ways to market your services as a freelance fashion stylist:

  • Word of mouth: If you start off by working for a company, you should build a reputation in the industry, which will make it easier to find clients. If you have little experience, you could try fashion styling for family or friends.
  • Make a website: Having a professional website will make you look more credible and is a great place to display your portfolio, prices, and contact details.
  • Portfolio: A good portfolio is vital to being a successful freelance fashion stylist. Take pictures of your clients (with their permission) and put them in your portfolio to show other people what you’re capable of.

Accounting as a freelance fashion stylist

There are various benefits to freelancing as a fashion stylist, from the freedom and flexibility to work with a variety of businesses and individuals to more take-home pay.

But there is one downside – accounting.

As a full-time employee, your tax is usually taken care of on your behalf in the form of PAYE.

As a freelancer you’ll have to keep a range of financial records and then prepare and pay a Self-Assessment tax return at the end of each business year.

Accountancy can be very confusing and can distract you developing your craft and finding new clients.

Getting tax and accountancy advice

With most accountants, you’ll pay them to do your year-end accounts, and then they’ll forget about you until the next year.

But for your business to be run smoothly and successfully, you’ll need advice on tax and accountancy throughout the year, especially in the early days.

Pearl Accountants is different

Pearl Accountants provides an affordable and specialist accountancy service designed just for freelancers.

Throughout the year we’ll be on hand to give you any tax and accountancy advice you might need, including things like:

  • Take-home pay
  • Which VAT scheme to register for
  • Expenses
  • Tax allowances
  • Choosing between sole trader and limited company
  • Running your business in a tax-efficient way

We charge for our accountancy services in a clear and simple way, which means you’ll never receive an unexpected bill, and you can get in touch for advice whenever you want without the worry of being charged a fortune like you would with many other accountants.

We recently migrated to Pearl Accountants from large national accounting firm. Transfer was easy and faultless. Friendly staff at Pearl lead us through the process with ease. Initially we were drawn to their service because of their attractive pricing structure. However it quickly became apparent to us that we were getting a lot more for our money than we initially thought as they are happy to stretch the engagement to all sorts of additional advice. Thumbs up to Pearl Accountants.
